You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me

I don't know if I'm meant to tell people this, but I love musicals, unconditionally. From Meet Me in St Louis to South Pacific to movies that aren't really musicals but in which the characters at certain points.

My favourites though have to be when Warner Bros decided to 'bring back' the musical in the early 1930s. The first two that they released were musicals about making musicals or 'shows' as they are referred to and are entitled 42nd Street and Gold Diggers of 1933, respectively. My favourite character in both is played by Ruby Keeler. She plays the ingenue in both and I love her wide eyed charm.

Also, I should mention that if you live in Australia, the musical section of BigW has both these movies for the sweet, sweet price of $8.87 each. I've always found it difficult to find old movies here (I've been looking for Grand Hotel for about 4 years now) but lately, BigW have really upped their game.

I have a soft spot in my heart for musicals too. Thanks for the movie tip. I have to check it out. And the gorup of girls in the fantastic mary jane shoes and playsuits. Gosh! Unfortunately, I have an even greater love for Broadway musicals.

I grew up on a steady diet of 50s Rogers and Hammerstein and Gilbert and Sullivan. So awfully good. I might have to get my ass down to Big W tomorrow and check them out.

Both of these movies are wonderful! I took a Great Depression class last semester and we spent the better part of a class period discussing 'Gold Diggers'. It was quite unique in the way it openly addressed the dire economic situation of the early 30's. By the way, I bought Grand Hotel on EBay for less than 10 USD. You might look there. Thanks for the great film stills!

I'm rather shocked I haven't seen Gold Diggers. That is going on my list to watch.
My sister and I both love musicals. We used to sing to each other too, especially the "Sisters" song from White Christmas... :)

Oh hello there! It's good to see you back, I've missed your posts. Just wanted to say I absolutely LOVE both of your handmade dresses, you are one talented seamstress! Musicals are so fun, I'm pretty sure they make all but the most twisted & bitter people happy!
