Dressing Up, Dressing Down

I haven't been posting as much as I want. I work full time and have been doing so for around six months now. When I'm dressing for work I tend to stick to the same shapes, patterns and pieces. All the clothing that I love and feel like myself in, tends to get left for afternoons and weekends.

Why? Why should I force myself to wear dowdy or "professional" clothing that a) doesn't make me feel happy and b) doesn't really show any personality.

I've recently come to the conclusion that dressing up, creating an outfit is something that I enjoy and I want to do it everyday. These are supposedly the best days of my life. I want to live them my way and as petulant as it sounds, wear what I want. I don't want to look back and shudder at the days I spent in black suits and striped poly cotton blouses.

Mango Tights

Mango Tights

This outfit is totally out of this world! Those mango tights shouldn't be so enthralling but for some reason I can't take my eyes off them, they are amazing. Although I'm seeing them as being less 'mango', more a salmony pink colour. It's possibly my computer screen but either way they are great and you are rocking them well.

(and I totally feel you on the drab work wear front, I spent about 90% of my time in work wear and it's so BORING! You never get a chance to wear all the cool things you want to)

I love the way you combined the red tights with the black skirt! Very stylish!

BTW, I'm hosting a Valentine's Day contest and I would love it if you entered! Please check back at my blog for more details!

I agree! Ever since I was little I believed that I had to dress in an outfit I love everyday. This all started when I saw in movies that you wear the outfit you die in, if you become a ghost. I took one look at the outfit I was wearing and i was horrified. Its been my motto ever since!!

ps I love your outfit, your tights are one of my favorite colors!!

In my job I have to wear a uniform, but I try to make my clothes as individual as I can - I was the first person at my store to wear a skirt to work, and I caused a revolution!!

I'm now wondering if I could get away with wearing a black pinafore dress with the uniform shirt underneath... what d'you reckon? It's not so different to wearing a skirt and a vest, really, which a lot of people do..

PS. Hydrangeas (sp?) are my favourite flower!

Well said. I must admit it took me a few years of corporate life before I really got comfortable with my own aesthetic in the office. Now I never buy anything that I would only wear to work and I'm so much happier.

Those tights are so amazing with this GORGEOUS ensemble!

Yay for awesome office-wear! Speaking of which, there is one item in particular (actually, it's a set of items) that I am including in your swap package that I imagine will be perfect for both self expression AND the office. I actually really loved it when I tried it on myself, but it's definitely meant for you :)

P.S. I sent you a flickr mail about exchanging addresses.

Beautiful! Feminine, lots of personality and professional at the same time.

I also have trouble with work wear. I'm lucky in that my work has quite a loose dress code but the nature of my work requires me to look like I know something besides the latest shape of skirts! Haha.

I adore this outfit--especially the way you paired such classic pieces with modern bright tights. Hurrah to you and your new resolution. Picking out an outfit the night before is a little ritual that gives me great peace of mind. :)

Good for you! Last year I worked in a tax office with a very strict dress code, and as fickle as it sounds, that dress code made my entire life ... just less. Having to dress up in office-appropriate clothing every day? It's almost soul-crushing.
